What is the gut microbiome?
The microbiome, put simply, is a collection of billions of microbes – including bacteria, viruses, fungi and their genes. These microbes live in different areas of a pet’s body, for example, an animal’s mouth, skin and – importantly – their gut.
The gut microbiome is currently a very hot topic in pet (and human) health, as researchers are continuing to learn more and more about how this microbiome can influence other aspects of a pet’s body, including digestion, immunity and inflammation.
However, if the gut microbiome becomes imbalanced, it can lead to a number of different health problems. Because of this, it is important to look after your pet’s gut where possible.
The microbiome is influenced by:
- Genetics
- Medication
- The environment
- Food
- Certain diseases
Diet and supplements are a great way for owners to support their pet’s microbiome and so, in this article, we will be talking about prebiotic, probiotic and postbiotic supplements and how they can contribute to gut – and overall – health.
How to Look After the Gut Microbiome – Prebiotics, Probiotics and Postbiotics
What are prebiotics, probiotic and postbiotic supplements? An easy way to get your head around what these supplements actually do, is by likening them to Yakult© for dogs and cats.
The supplements are made up of good bacteria and their metabolites, which help to support and balance the gut microbiome, supporting gut health. Each supplement type will work in a slightly different way:
- Prebiotic – fibre-like feed. These substances act as fuel for the bacteria in the gut.
- Probiotics – live bacteria. These beneficial bacteria help to balance and support the microbiome, allowing good bacteria to thrive.
- Postbiotics – digested compounds. These metabolites are made when friendly bacteria in an animal’s gut digest and breakdown fibres.
There are a range of different pre, pro and postbiotic supplement products currently available on the market, and they come in a variety of different formulations including:
- Tablets
- Powders
- Pastes
- Liquids
Liquid formulations can work well – particularly for long-term use – as they can easily be mixed in with your pet’s daily feed. Precision Microbes is a great example of an easy-to-administer liquid pro and postbiotic and is the only product of its kind available in the UK and European market.
When to Give Probiotics and Postbiotic Supplements
As the only pro and postbiotic liquid in the pet market, Precision Microbes utilises the well-regarded veterinary probiotic Enterococcus Faecum NCIMB 10415, alongside a number of specialist herbs, to support digestive function. [OH1]
As an ideal solution for long-term daily administration, not only does this help to maintain the gut microbiome, but Precision Microbes can also contribute to overall health. Healthy gut = happy pet!
The probiotic and postbiotic supplement can also be used during short periods of digestive upset, as there are some specific circumstances that can cause an imbalance in your pet’s gut microbiome for example:
- Stress, which could be caused by changes in environment
- When your pet is taking certain types of medication
- A sudden change in diet
Precision Microbes contains both probiotics and live postbiotics, which can contribute towards a speedy recovery in particular cases of digestive upset.
Valerie, a Miniature Schnauzer Owner in Dublin, started her pups on Precision Microbes and was delighted with the results, “I put them on the Precision Microbes and within a week there was a huge difference. They have been on it now for eight weeks and they are thriving, they haven’t had any stomach problems and are pooing perfectly!” she explains. “Their coat is no longer dry, it’s now shiny and healthy. I would highly recommend Precision Microbes for anyone dealing with dogs that have had poor nutrition or for dogs that are having ongoing stomach problems. It is a brilliant boost for all dogs, and the results will be seen quickly.”
When to Speak to a Vet
It is important to bear in mind that – while Precision Microbes can be very beneficial in helping to support the gut – this product is not a cure-all solution.
This product will not be suitable for every animal and, if you have any concerns regarding your pet’s digestive system, or their overall health, it is always best to get in touch with your vet for further advice.
You can find out more information and check out the Precision Microbes products here.
[OH1]I have edited this slightly as it was a little confusing stating that Precision Microbes is not like herb based products but contains herbs (I understand what you are saying but I think readers may become confused)
